What is an e-book?

e-book is short for for electronic book and often refers to popular or leisure digital copies of books that may downloaded onto portable electronic devices, including e-book readers. Access to scholarly e-books from academic libraries is sometimes different. Although they are still e-books and their access varies, they are usually accessed through a computer or mobile device using a web browser and their access is really electronic access to books.

What is different about a scholarly e-book?

Due to licensing agreements with publishers, access for academic libraries to scholarly e-books varies greatly. Some e-books may be downloaded to mobile devices; others may be downloaded one chapter at a time. Some limit the number of chapters that can be downloaded and many may be viewed on computers and mobile devices using a web browser.

Our libraries have purchased electronic access to tens of thousands of e-books and the number continues to grow. Scholarly e-books provide a wealth of information that is accessible online.
