Library Research Guide

Organizations

Public and private organizations can be great places to find information. However, having a .org domain does not guarantee that the information is valid and reliable. Be sure to use the criteria under the "Evaluating Sources" tab to determine the usefulness of the information you find. Search for information about the organization in places other than its website before you decide to trust it.

General Research

Guttmacher Institute
This site promotes multidisciplinary research in the field of human development to foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals of various disciplines, and to encourage applications of research findings.
Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic provides consumer-oriented information about diseases and conditions including overviews, symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment.

Children and Families

Child Trends
A nonprofit, nonpartisan research center that studies children at all stages of development. Areas of research include early childhood development, fatherhood and parenting, and marriage and family.
National Council on Family Relations
This site provides an educational forum for sharing in the development and dissemination of knowledge about families and family relationships, establishes professional standards, and works to promote family well-being.

Child Welfare

Child Welfare League of America
A coalition of hundreds of private and public agencies serving vulnerable children and families since 1920. Identifies resources relating to advocacy, practice areas, research/data, culture/diversity, and more.
National Center for Children in Poverty
A public policy center dedicated to promoting the economic security, health, and well-being of America’s low-income families and children.

Education

National Association for the Education of Young Children
The world's largest organization working on behalf of young children, whose mission is to improve the well-being of all young children, with particular focus on the quality of educational and developmental services for all children from birth through age 8.
National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE)
NASDSE focuses on improving educational services and outcomes for children and youth with disabilities.

Government Websites

The federal government and state governments provide many sources of data and research. You can generally trust the validity of information from .gov websites.

Children's Health

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
The institute was established to study the process of human development. In pursuit of its mission, NICHD conducts and supports laboratory research, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies that explore health processes; examines the impact of disability and disease ; and sponsors training programs for scientists, health care providers, and researchers.
Healthfinder.gov
Has resources on a wide range of health topics selected from approximately 1,400 government and non-profit organizations
Maternal and Child Health Bureau
Provides data, research, and support on maternal and child health topics.

Children's Education

Kansas State Department of Education
Administers the state’s governance of education, standards and assessments, special education services, child nutrition and wellness, title programs and services, career and technical education, and financial aid. This website provides many resources about state policies and procedures.
National Center for Special Education Research
Supports rigorous research on infants, toddlers, children, and youth with and at risk for disabilities through advancing the understanding of and practices for teaching, learning, and organizing education systems.
U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs
Dedicated to improving results for infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities ages birth through 21 by providing leadership and financial support to assist states and local districts.
