The US government collects high quality that is available to researchers for free. The government has a data portal called data.gov, but it's often easier to find governments data by using a domain search in a search engine like Google, Duck Duck Go, or Bing.
As an example, you can use your browser to navigate to Google. Enter your search terms followed by the syntax "site:gov." This syntax is called a domain search, and it will limit your search to government websites.
